Arctic Snowman

Pre-school- Kindergartners
Arctic Snowman

Winter is not over yet in the North West!

Basic snowman                       This one was a big hit with the Kids!!
What you will need.

Low tack tape
Tempera paint
white or opaque Glitter...yes, I said that dreaded word!
Watercolor paper
Snowman stencil - I cut stencil's out of manila folders
penciles
paints brushes
glue
buttons.

Start by taping all sides of watercolor paper.
Have the kids paint blue over the entire surface. Blot with rag or paper towels. This will speed the drying process.

With a pencil have the kids trace the snowman. Using white tempera paint, paint the snowman and background. Make sure your snowman is "grounded or Anchored into the snow. see samples.
Now using the eraser side of the pencil...dip it in white paint to make snowflakes!
let dry....REMOVE TAPE

Next: I give the kiddos a bit of freedom how they would like to personalize their snowman.
A few basic tips. I have the kids draw with pencil where the eyes, scarf, hat, buttons and mouth will go. Then paint. I talk about how to choose a brush, how to draw a hat using simple shapes. Add any embellishments you wish. Buttons, glitter....

I think this kiddo is going to be a pop artist!

Flip Flop Fun

More to share from Summer Art Camp

Another summer camp project, flip flop fun. The kids made and decorated their flip flops any way they wanted. Then glued them on a beach back drop made on canvas. We used real sand for the beach and shaving cream mixed with white acrylic paint for the waves.
I posted the template for the flip flops. The kids had a ball. And the flip flops
almost fit their feet!

First step, Paint the top portion of a 11x14 canvas board blue. The bottom brown. I prefer where the ocean meets the sand on and angel. Makes the composition  more interesting.

Set project aside to dry... meanwhile,  have the kids use markers to decorate their dlop flops.
(I used a template to print out flip flops on white card stock. see bottom of post for template.)
I used bright colored pipe cleaners for the flip flop bands. I brought in different kids of beads for the kids to
thread the pipe cleaners.

As the kids finished their flip flops, I called them over to a station were we painted the dry brown beach surface with glue and sprinkled real sand!
Almost as fun as glitter. But easier to clean up.

No beach is complete with out shaving cream waves.
Mix a little white acrylic with some shaving cream on a paper plate and let the kids mix it.
For a few of my younger artist, I drew a few wave lines for them trace.
For the final touch.. we glued on shells.

Paper Mache Bowls

Sharing some summer fun from art camp

Start by blowing up some balloons.
Make a round base for the balloon to sit.
Tear or cut scrap paper into strips or squares.
Spray top of balloon lightly with cooking spray for easy release.

Using gloss paper mache or mod podge, paint a layer of mod podge on balloon then paint strip of paper. Repeat for each strip. Using your brush to flatten down each layer.

Important: If your paper pattern is one sided, lay the first layer upside-down covering entire bowl.
Then apply a second layer right-side up .

Your pattern will be on the inside and outside of your finished bowl.

Waiting for bowls to dry. Takes a few days.

After bowls are dry, pop the balloon. peal balloon from bowl.
Cut edges to make a clean rim.

 Finished!!
